Here I am sat at London heathrow waiting to fly to Vienna for the Austrian open, so you would expect a blog about golf, no. but the practice has been going very well and looking forward to this week! Maybe my diet as I have now lost 13lbs on the Dukan diet, no. I want to tell you about chickens!
4years ago we got some rescue chickens from the British hen welfare trust, a charity that saves caged hens from going to slaughter after a year of laying eggs in a cage that's far to small to house 1 hen, let alone 6! They turned up looking bewildered at the green grass and open space with very few feathers! Over the years we lost a few of them but knowing they died nicely in retirement home with being totally spoilt and us enjoying there wonderful fresh eggs. For the last year we have been left with 3, Damian, as she looked like she was a little demond! Little guy, she was the smallest and Scruffy, as she never regained full feathers but she was very strong!
We had a big hen house for them as years ago my mum had had hens before, they lived in this until one day scruffy moved out and started sleeping under a bush! Puzzled we were. Little guy soon followed to be with her friend but later we found out the hut had a very bad case of red mite, we lost 2 chickens because of this but wow, scruffy was clever!
3 days ago Scruffy all of a sudden kept losing her balance and falling over, last night she died which was actually very sad but thankfully very quick, what fascinated me is that the chicken we called little guy sat with her wherever she was for these 3 days. For the last day scruffy never left the hut and little guy stayed with her, we couldn't actually keep them apart, and not just with her but near enough on top of her, as though she was keeping her warm. It is the most wonderful thing I have ever witnessed, as though they were friends and she didn't want her to be on her own. Little guys personality is amazing, she is more than a chicken, she thinks she's a human in a chickens body! So for all you wondering, Do these animals that we think are dumb and stupid show compassion and love YES. More than some people!
